A cool movie - its a more cross-cultural disaster movie than I've seen before. If you download the files provided and hosted by campfire (below) but the subs appear green and fuzzy after you burn the dvd, follow these instructions. Other instructions I've followed didn't work, but these modified instructions do. Follow campfire's instructions to rename files, etc. Download and open DVDSubEdit (free) 'File' > 'Open Full Domain' select VTS_01_1.VOB. Click on p (this is the text outline) and select black from the colour table. Click on e1 (this is the body of the text) and select white from the colour table. It's possible that the colour table will show all sixteen colours the same shade of green. In this case,while it's popped up, place the cursor on one of the squares, hold down the 'Shift' key and click the mouse - a new selection appears . Select the colour you want the square to be (select black). Do the same for e1 (select white). Click 'Edit > Apply last modifications to all' Select the 'color' option Click 'Do it!' When you save the changes, they are made immediately (no undo). Rating and Dvd Sub Fix tellus 2009-06-20 15:56:38 2009-06-20 15:56:38 4 Almayer is quite wrong....he must have missed downloading parts of this, because I went back and checked what I originally downloaded after Campfire's post, and this most definitely IS the original Japanese cut with a running time of 155 min....this version is the original full-length Japanese release of the film. It looks perfect, appears to have the original stereo soundtrack, and the video files for download (at least the MPEG2 versions I downloaded) are in anamorphic widescreen. Understand that when the MPEG files are downloaded they would need to be renamed to have VOB extensions (as noted in a previous review). The instructions contained in that same review are fine for the first stage in building the correct DVD information content. Also download the necessary files for having the subtitles display for the Japanese sequences (noted from previous review at: http://www.hunkvideoonline.com/virus/). In addition, I would also suggest changing the colors of the subtitles - as noted in another review for this film. The previous reviewer (tellus) noted that the subtitles appeared "green and fuzzy" and he was correct (I've seen it) so changing the colors (as noted in his review) is a tremendous help. The program suggested for doing this appears to be a free\legal download. His instructions for completing this process are complete and correct. There is also a user's manual available for download from that same website. However, after all of those processes have been completed you will have files that are able to be burned to a Dual Layer DVD. For some people that may not have Dual Layer DVD capabilities the question is, "What can be done?" The answer is simple. You will (additionally) have to download a DVD shrinking, or compression, piece of software. There are many available for (free) download from the internet. Do a random search and take your pick. After that, you will need to take all of the above noted files\information and run them thru the shrinking software. Then burn the new content using DVD burning software. With this, you will have a movie on a single layer DVD (4.35 GB or also known as a DVD5) that is set to autoplay when inserted into a standard home DVD player. The titles will be easily readable. The sound will be in stereo. There are also chapter stops. Because of the method applied to create the original MPEG files, the picture quality is superb. You can then sit back and enjoy this very interesting film. I tried out everything today and thought I'd let you know of my experience. Strangely enough, the DVD will play in standalone players, but it won't play in PowerDvd in my computer. ...But it DOES play... and it is a terrific film. When using the DVSubEdit, the last file, number 7, kept coming up as "read only" which meant I couldn't save the changes to subs across all the vob files. Turns out that number 7 is just the end credits and there are no superimposed subs anyways. So, the solution it to follow the instructions as provided by the others, but just open and correct 1 VOB file at a time (e.g. VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB etc. etc.) Also, when using DVSubEdit, when selecting P1, I recommend BRIGHT YELLOW, not WHITE (the film is, after all, set in the antarctic).
